About Us

The Department of Malay Language and Culture at the National Institute of Education operates as a divisional component of the Asian Languages and Cultures academic group.

Our Mission

The overall mission of the Department as a whole has been, and continues to be the strengthening of both initial teacher-training and graduate studies and continuing professional development courses for Malay language teachers by providing programmes of broad scope and high quality. Whilst offering a general preparation to teach in both primary and secondary schools, the MLCD offers unique opportunities for both trainee-teachers and returning teachers concentration in a number of key areas of expertise, subject to levels of interest.

The purpose of the programmes offered by the MLC is to prepare students for a career in teaching on the basis of sound professional values and approaches to practice in the teaching of Malay language and/or literature in schools.

Modular Structure

The Department organises its modular programmes under three broad headings: language, literature, and culture/civilization. The majority of courses are taught in Malay. Language courses are offered at all levels, and include developmental psycholinguistics which examines current research and theoretical models of children's language acquisition of Malay, and introduction to theories, problems, and methods in teaching Malay as a second language.
