Prior to joining the Faculty of Arts, University of Brunei Darussalam as a lecturer in the Department of Languages and Linguistics, (1985-1994), Associate Professor Paitoon worked as a research officer in Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Kementerian Kebudayaan dan Kesenian, Malaysia (1983); as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand (1984), and as a lecturer at the Centre for Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia (1985).

His areas of expertise include Comparative Linguistics of Austronesian and Austroasian languages, Phonetics and Phonology, and Language Education.
